Andy, Cupid’s gift to Harlem’s weaker sex, sailed early yesterday morning for Europe on board the verboten Nazi liner the Bremen, accompanied by his wife, Mrs. Charles J. Correll.
Questioned by reporters as to why he was disregarding the anti-Nazi boycott, the love-sick, trouble-hunting part of the famed Amos ‘n’ Andy team of the air waves, delivered himself of the following rather lame explanation:
“I have a great many Jewish friends,” he said, “as well as numerous German friends. I would not knowingly antagonize either group for the world. The fact of the matter is, that I had not the slightest idea what boats I would take, coming or going.”
