Plans to revise a Good Friday prayer in the Anglican prayerbook considered offensive to Jews were disclosed today by Right Rev. H. R. Hunt, suffragan bishop of Toronto. He said that a motion for such revision was approved by the 200 delegates at the Anglican synod’s executive council meeting.
The Good Friday prayer includes the petition “have mercy on the Jews” and “take from them all ignorance, hardness of heart and contempt of the Word. ” Bishop Hunt said that it was agreed that it was “desirable that such negative words in reference to a people be replaced by positive words of Christian charity and warm concern.”
He also reported that “dialogue meetings” arranged by the church with Jews had expanded to such an extent that demands for such meetings currently far exceed the Anglican church’s capacity to arrange them.
