The British Foreign Office practice of condemning Israeli reprisal raids and not the incidents which caused them is “unctuously hypocritical and very unhelpful,” R. N. Carvalho, president of the Anglo-Jewish Association, declared here last night at a meeting of the organization. He said that the only remedy for the incidents and reprisals was a general peace.
Making reference to Israel’s “great restraint” in the Suez Canal situation, Mr. Carvalho called upon the Western Big Three to state “quite unequivocally” their determination to take up arms immediately against any aggressor in the Middle East. He said that observers believe that Egyptian President Nasser is biding his time before attacking Israel.
The AJA leader linked the well-being of Britain and the Middle East with the solution of Israel’s economic and military problems. He also called on Britain to supply Israel with defensive weapons, such as the Canadian Sabre jets, so that Egypt would not dare attack.
In a comment on the West German decision to readmit former S. S. officers to apply for commissions in Bonn’s new army, Mr. Carvalho said “we Jews are naturally revolted that such men are to be rehabilitated in the public opinion and are to be given an opportunity of leading the future German army.” He called on the British Government to “use all its influence to bring about its (Bonn’s) reversal of so offensive a decision.”
