The situation of the Jews in East European countries was discussed here today at a meeting of the council of the Anglo-Jewish Association. Rowland Landman, chairman of the foreign affairs committee of the association, refuted assertions that Jews in these countries are living under conditions of “unprecedented tyranny.” However, he added that there are undoubtedly cases where Jews have not been accorded full religious freedom in countries behind the “iron curtain.”
Landman expressed confidence that matters concerning the social and religious activities of the Jews in countries behind the iron curtain would be settled through the work of the U.N. Commission on Human Bights, on which East European countries are represented.
Concern about the future of the Evelyn de Rothschild school, located in Jerusalem, was voiced at the meeting. L.C. Beber, chairman of the Association’s school committee, pointed out that the school student end faculty bodies had not yet been” able to return to their own premises, nor was it established yet whether the institution will be included in Israeli territory, an international or the Arab zone.
