Aron Barth, general manager of the Anglo-Palestine Bank, arrived today in New York in connection with the opening of the Bank’s office in the United States.
Gideon Strauss, former Israel Consul in charge of commercial affairs in New York, will serve as the Bank’s representative here.
Established in 1902, the Anglo-Palestine Bank is the leading financial institution in Israel and acts as banker to the Government of Israel. It issues Israel’s currency under a government charter. Total assets of the Bank amount to nearly $280,000,000.
As of 1951, the Bank, which is now changing its juridical structure, will be an Israel corporation, and not a British corporation as in the past. It will be known as Bank Leumi le-Israel — National Bank of Israel — but the change will not affect stock ownership or control. Mr. Strauss will maintain liaison with the Bank’s correspondents in the United States and Canada, and will assist American business interests in Israel and the Bank’s clients who deal with America.
