A “group of journalists and people of liberal professions” have addressed an appeal to all intellectuals in this country, asking for aid in establishing a fascist state in Brazil. The appeal reads in part:

“The nation is slowly dying out, divided as it is into as many fatherlands, each organized to protect its own interests, as there are groups in the country. We must be concerned with Brazil as a whole. We must create a Brazil for Brazilians, fighting for the introduction of a fascist regime among us . . . . We want a disciplined, energetic and morally cleansed nation and a prolific fatherland.”

The call, which was sent to all intellectuals of Brazil, is signed by “Brazil Social Action”. There are no other signatures on it, and it is therefore impossible to determine its source. It is evident, however, that it originated among the local Hitlerites and their Brazilian exponent, the Integralite party, which is very insignificant and has not been heard from for some time. The most influential newspapers made no mention of the appeal, but the local Hitlerite paper grabbed at “the awakening to consciousness of the Brazilian masses”. Nor did it spare the Jews, who “came to Brazil to rob the poor Brazilians”.

In the Jewish colonies of the country the appeal created a great deal of bitterness. The local Folkszeitung carries a very sharp attack against these anonymous “protectors” of the Brazilian nation.
