Quick passage in the State Senate was expected today of a bill prohibiting discrimination on racial or religious grounds in private housing accommodations of five or more living units. The bill cleared the House of Representatives last week over vigorous opposition.
The lower house also voted approval of a bill giving the State Civil Rights Commission authority to initiate action on its own without awaiting the filing of complaints.
The housing bill had the backing of the leadership of both parties in the lower house. The platforms of both parties in the last election contained pledges of legislation on housing discrimination.
