The Lebanese Cabinet was told yesterday that the current anti-Israel Arab blockade was doing more harm to the Arab economies than to Israel, it was reported here today from Beirut, in the French leading daily newspaper, Le Monde.
The report was made by Pierre Gemayel, Lebanese Minister for Economic Affairs, who said Lebanon may take the initiative in asking the Arab League to consider the possibility of a complete revision of blockade practices.
The Minister’s proposal was prompted by a recent incident when a Norwegian freighter, the Mars, had been blacklisted by the Arab League for trading with Israel, and was therefore barred from discharging its cargo in Beirut. However, it was permitted to discharge the cargo at Alexandria, Egypt, by the Egyptian authorities.
