Mistreatment of Jews on the trains in Transylvania is again reported by the local paper “Uj Kelet.” One incident resulted in the death of a Jewish passenger.
On the train coming from Orademare, at the station Careimare, several Jews, who were travelling in one of the compartments, were ordered to leave the train by a Roumanian soldier, who came in shouting: “Clear cut the Jews.”
The soldier was accompanying a prisoner who sat down near one of the Jewish passengers, a Talmudist by the name of Berl Schoen, the father of six children. The Jewish passenger, who was traveling with his three year old daughter, was then summarily stabbed by the soldier with his bayonet. The little girl fell upon her father’s breast, sobbing: “Get up father.”
The soldier, who was later arrested, gave as the reason for the stabbing, the story that Schoen had offered his prisoner a cigarette.
This incident has caused a great depression among the Jewish population of the district in which it occurred.
