Two Jewish Settlements in Pokrowsk Region Terrorized and Plundered (Jewish Telegraphic Agency)
Confirmation of recent reports that an anti-Jewish agitation is current in certain parts of the Ukraine was seen here in a report published in the Communist Yiddish daily of Charkoff, “Der Stern,” received here today.
According to the report of the Communist daily, an anti-Jewish agitation is raging in the region of Pokrowsk. Two Jewish colonies, Kalinin and Uspenska, were attacked by neighboring Ukrainian peasants. The attack occurred in the middle of the day. Houses were plundered and the entire livestock and machinery were taken away. The local authorities took no measures against the attacking peasants although the Jewish settlements asked the militia for protection. Now, the district committee instituted an investigation, which resulted in the removal of the district chairman, Lemeschko, and the chief of the district militia, Tkatschenko.
“Der Stern” criticizes severely the local Communist organization, accusing it of indifference. The relations between the Jews and the Ukrainian peasants are highly strained, the paper states.
