American Negro college students, while gaining increased self-esteem as Negroes, are adopting stereotyped anti-Jewish attitudes, according to a psychiatric sociology study released here. The study, reported to the recent world Congress on Sociology, was prepared by personnel of the Psychiatric Institute at the University of Maryland.
Negro students tested at Morgan State College in Maryland indicated “feelings that Jews are clannish, strange, and unpredictable. ” It was found that, among the emerging intellectual Negro youth, “the Jewish minority is also viewed in stereotypic terms.” Agreement was expressed with a statement that “there is something different and strange about Jews; it’s hard to tell what they are thinking and planning, and what makes them tick. ” The Negroes also felt that “to end prejudice against Jews, the first step is for the Jews to try sincerely to get rid of their harmful and irritating faults.”
