Six thousand Jews and non-Jews packed the Arena Gardens Sunday afternoon in a protest meeting against the Johnson Immigration Bill. The meeting was held under the combined auspices of 58 Jewish organizations. The key-note of the meeting was sounded in the address of Bishop Michael J. Gallagher, of the Catholic Diocese of Detroit, who declared that “We have never had to suffer for our generosity toward immigration.”
Rabbi Leo M. Franklin of the Temple Bethel and Rabbi A. M. Hershman of the Congregation Shaary Zedek declared themselves in favor of a limited immigration butcalled the Johnson Bill dangerous and vicious because it threatened to divide the population in to superior Nordics and inferiors. The City Council is expected to adopt a resolution this week protesting against the Johnson Bill.
