Events in Nazi Germany continued today to move steadily toward crystallization of the crisis confronting the Hitler regime as the government desperately sought to stem the growth of discontent openly spreading like wildfire following the Marburg speech of Vice Chancellor Franz von Papen.

Shocked by the overwhelming approval manifested for von Papen’s bold stand and this despite suppression of the speech in German newspapers Nazi leaders advanced to several fronts to check the development of anti-Nazi sentiment and thwart opposition to their regime.

ATTACK MONARCHISTS

While the government moved for complete suppression of the monarchistic War Veterans League in which most of the Stahlhelm has been incorporated, following a stabbing affray in Pomerania, Nazi oratorical big guns moved into the fray with slashing attacks at the “fine gentlemen” now leading the opposition to continued Nazi rule. The war veterans, strongly monarchistic and hostile to Hitler were accused in a report of the secret police of participation in a nation-wide plot to overthrow the regime.

As the government moved in this manner to check any possible overt action against it, Nazi orators sought to arouse recrudescence of the unreasoning hysteria which they had skillfully evoked in the German people and maintained almost all through the first year of their reign.

GOERING LAUNCHES ATTACK

Thus, while Minister of Propaganda Goebbels, Minister of Justice Frank and Rudolph Hess, Hitler’s adjutant in charge of the Nazi party, ridiculed and berated the moderates and denounced the growing monarchist movement Premier Goering of Prussia tried to arouse a new wave of anti-Semitic feeling as a red herring across the Nazi trail.

Identifying himself with Julius Streicher, overlord of Franconia and leader of the rabid anti-Semites in the party, Goering warned that the German people must continue the campaign against the Jews started by the Nazis. He praised Streicher’s work in crushing the Jews in Franconia.

CALLS FOR RELIGIOUS WAR

Streicher called on the assembly for a “religious war” on the Jews. He, as well as Goering, received a luke-warm reception.

In Silesia, Edmund Heines, convicted murderer and leader of the storm troopers there, also exhorted his followers to a war on the Jews.

Complicating the situation for the Hitler government today were the developments in connection with the German moratorium on foreign obligations to go into effect Sunday. At a time when internal rifts are at a serious stage, the government is faced with an impending trade war as European powers threaten retaliation by the seizure of German credits and Dr. Schacht, Reichsbank head and virtual financial dictator of Germany, is talking of counter-measures.
