cieties, a non-Jew, and Dr. Fritz Schlesinger, treasurer, a Jew, who had announced their intention of resigning after Monday’s meeting, relinquished their posts Thursday. Both issued formal statements. Magistrate Brandt discredited the widely prevailing opinion that his sympathy lies with the anti-Nazi bloc, asserting that his resignation was provoked by the “unseemly” conduct at the meeting. His resignation terminates a membership that has lasted over forty years. He had been president of the United Societies two years.

Dr. Schlesinger denounced what he termed the “un-American” attitude of the organization in countenancing Nazi elements. He upheld the patriotic nature of the Jewish bloc, adding that the dissension is being fomented by the Steel Helmet veterans’ group here, the Kaufmannische Verein, the German National Commerce Association and other “branches of organizations having headquarters in Germany which have been coordinated.”
