Jose Rucci, secretary general of the powerful Peronista Labor Confederation, today repudiated a right-wing politico who has been conducting an anti-Semitic campaign in Argentina. Rucci’s remarks on a television interview apparently allayed the uneasiness felt in the Jewish community here over his failure until now to take a position on an open letter addressed to him two months ago by Walter Beveraggi Allende alleging that Jews and Zionists control Argentina and were plotting its destruction.
Asked to comment on the Allende letter, Rucci, with a gesture of disgust, replied, “I don’t read what this gentleman writes. This gentleman has an account to settle with the country.” The latter remark was an allusion to the fact that Allende was branded a traitor by the 1951 National Congress, with the concurrence of the two major parties, Peronista and Radicals, and was threatened with loss of his citizenship. Allende is a professor at the Buenos Aires law school. His propaganda campaign against Argentine Jews is believed to be backed by the Arab League.
