Justice of the Peace Maranditsh has found the theological students arrested in the recent student anti-Semitic excesses not guilty. The evidence of the police was vague but one officer admitted under questioning that he became so frightened and muddled that he arrested Jews by mistake.
The mayor of Kishinev testified that a few days before the disturbances Nikescu, president of the Students’ Union informed him that the professors were inciting the students to anti-Semitic disturbances. When the students’ union president was refused a subsidy for an anti-Semitic paper, the mayor of Kishinev testified that Nikescu threatened revenge against the Jews.
The accused students argued that Jews attacked them and the Jews themselves broke windows for provocation. The verdict is a great disappointment to the Jewish population which sees in this an inducement to further anti-Semitic outrages which appear to be particularly rampant on the Bessarabian railways.
