James Farmer, executive director of the Congress for Racial Equality, asserted last night that anti-Semitism among Negroes was increasing as one aspect of the militance of the Negro fight for civic rights.
He said that he deplored such anti-Semitism, which he said was fanned by the Black Muslims and other Negro nationalist groups but he also contended that Negroes were frequently exploited by tenement owners and rent collectors who were Jewish. He made the statements at a meeting of the American Jewish Congress.
Shad Polier, chairman of the Governing Council of the AJC, replied with a call for toleration by the Negro which he said the Negro was asking of white men.
