The hand of friendship was officially extended to Northwest Jewry in the name of Washington’s 100,000 Cathlics by Bishop Gerald shaughnessy, at Temple Center, speaking before more than 1,500 Jews an non-Jews.
The audience, one of th largest ever to gather at a B’nai B’rith open meeting , greeted Bishop Shaughnessy’s pledge of “continued good will between Catholic and Jew” with applause that lasted several minutes. Declaring that anti-Semitie an anti-Catholic sentimen will never die completely, he said “even in Germany the main onslaught of Hitlrism has worked itself out, for the most part, I think. Of caurse the seed of hatred and bigotry has been planted to sprout for many years. I don’t think it will ever be competely uprooted.”
At the meeting a resolution introduced by P. Ailen Rickles, B’nai B’rith leader, urging passage in congress of the Tydings Resolution, which calls upon the Senate to protest against Germany’s persecution fo Jewss adn other minorities, was passed unanimouly.
