The demonstrations which the Hitlerists announced would be organised if the “All Quiet” film was permitted to be produced in Vienna took place this evening, continuing all through the night. As in Berlin last month, they took the form of an antisemitic outbreak, the demonstrators shouting “Down with the Jewish film” and other antisemitic cries. Attempts were made to start attacks on Jews in many streets, the Hitlerists repeatedly breaking through the police cordons. In a number of streets the windows in Jewish shops were smashed and an attack was also made on the synagogue in the Schmelzhof Street. Large police reinforcements were called out, preventing the excesses becoming widespread. The fighting in some places, was, however, very serious and many policemen have been injured. It is alleged that soldiers were seen in the ranks of the Hitlerists, some of them even wearing military uniform.

The Hitlerists announce that they intend to continue the disturbances until “All Quiet” has been withdrawn, as in Berlin.

Uriel Birnbaum, the well known Jewish artist and writer, son of Dr. Nathan Birnbaum, the prominent Agudist, who was one of the early Zionists and the organiser of the first Yiddish Language Conference held in Cernowitz over a quarter of a century ago, has published an article in the Catholic daily “Reichspost” joining in the protest against the “All Quiet” talkie and against Remarque and those associated with him in this presentation of war happenings. Uriel Birnbaum lost both his legs in the war.
