The Apostolic Delegation to the United States, the Papal representation at Washington, is not in possession of any information as to whether the recent agreement concluded between the Italian government and the Vatican, including the enforcement of the Canon Law of the Catholic Church in Italy, would affect Italian Jewry.
This statement came in reply to an inquiry by the Jewish Telegraphic Agency directed to His Excellency, Rev. Pictro Fumasoni-Biondi, as to whtther, and if so how, the Jewish community of Italy would be affected in its legal, political and religious status under the agreement.
The reply read: “His Exellency, the Apostolic Delegate, is in receipt of your communication of February 12th, requesting to know whether, and if so how, the Jewish community in Italy will be affected under the agreement concluded by the Holy See and the Italian government.
“I regret to have to inform you that this Delegation has no information concerning the matter.”
