Reports reaching regional headquarters here indicate unprecedented interest in the united drive to aid Jews in Germany and other lands and to settle Jews in Palestine.
From Newport News, Va., Max Levinson, chairman of the campaign committee, reports that half the quota raised before the campaign was officially opened. From Portsmouth, I. H. Rosenfeld, chairman of the United Jewish Appeal, writes that all preparations for a campaign have been completed, and the drive is now beginning.
Suffolk, Berkley, and Hampton-Phoebus, Va., have already sent funds to regional headquarters. Richmond, Va., completed its task by oversubscribing its quota for the first time in the history of that community.
Washington, D. C., is closing its campaign with a substantial sum realized. Greensboro, N.C., set the pace in giving for all communities in that State when it was the first city in the country to report on the United Jewish Appeal, with $5,000 realized. Many North Carolina cities are now conducting campaign collections.
Charleston and other South Carolina cities are making plans for early campaigns. Norfolk, Va., Baltimore and other Maryland cities will shortly put into motion plans for early Fall campaigns.
