A sum in excess of $141,000 has been raised to date by the Jewish community of Philadelphia toward the national quota if $3,250,000 of the United Jewish Appeal, it was announced yesterday at a workers’ rally at which Joseph C. Hyman of New York, honorary secretary of the United Jewish Appeal, was the guest speaker. Jerome J. Rothschild, co-chairman of the Philadelphia drive, presided at the luncheon.
Reports on the activities of the men’s division and the women’s division were the principal features of the rally, with Judge William M. Lewis, Mrs. Lessing Rosenwald, and Mrs. Morris Wolf describing the results that have been registered in Philadelphia’s effort to provide funds for the relief and rehabilitation of the Jews of Germany and other lands and for the settlement of Jews in Palestine. All teams and workers are continuing their canvassing.
A plea to the Jews of Philadelphia as to Jews throughout the country not to regard the Appeal as merely another “charitable campaign” was made in the address of Mr. Hyman, who said:
“The United Jewish Appeal dare not be considered just another charitable campaign. It is the supreme challenge to the Jews of the United States, as it is to the Jews of England and other world communities, not to permit our brethren to be overcome by the evil forces of race-hatred and oppression.”
