The sum of $757,000 has been raised by the New York campaign of the United Jewish Appeal for German Jewish relief, it was announced yesterday by I. Edwin Goldwasser, Nathan Straus Jr., and Ira M. Younker, co-chairmen of the drive in Greater New York. The United Jewish Appeal, which represents the combined efforts of the Joint Distribution Committee and the American Palestine Campaign to bring aid to German Jewish refugees, is engaged in a nation-wide campaign to raise $3,000,000 for this cause. The objective of the New York drive is $1,200,000.
Activities of the various branches of the campaign organization including the Women’s Division headed by Mrs. Roger W. Straus and the Trades Council headed by Michael Schaap, have been carried on through the summer, with the result that $50,000 has been obtained for German Jewish relief during the past six weeks.
Samuel Blitz, executive director of the New York drive, declared yesterday that plans had already been adopted for intensification of campaign efforts in the weeks to come. These plans provide for the presentation of a mammoth outdoor entertainment festival at the Yankee Stadium on Sept. 20. It is expected that $100,000 will be realized through this enterprise. A large stage which will accommodate an orchestra of 1,000 is being built.
