The controversy which has been raging here over the attitude of the Zionist Executive toward the Yiddish schools has reached an acute stage. Appeal has been made to the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee, which grants subventions to the Yiddish schools in Poland, to the J. L. Peretz Writers Club in New York and to the Jewish P. E. N. Clubs in various countries. The appeal, which was cabled by Peretz Hirschbein, noted Jewish writer, published here in the “Volkszeitung,” asserts that the Zionists, through the newspaper “Hajnt” are undermining the Yiddish schools in Poland. “I appeal to you to protest and do your utmost to prevent the agitation which is going on all over Poland against the Yiddish schools.”
The dissension arose between the Zionist Executive and the Bund, the Executive having criticized the labor party’s negative attitude with regard to the recent Palestine events. In reply to the Bund’s charge that the Executive was boycotting the Jewish schools, the Zionists declared that they have taken a stand only against the schools of the Bund.
