An appropriation by the Joint Distribution Committee for May of nearly $5,400,000 “brings the total 1948 appropriations to date to more than $30,400,000, the agency announced here today.
At the same time it was made known that, on the recommendation of JDC European chief Dr. Joseph J. Schwartz, the organization is launching a special Bummer amp project for thousands of Jewish youngsters in Europe, particularly those suffering from malnutrition and orphans. Approximately 140,000 Jewish children in Europe ##e now receiving JDC aid.
Of the total five-month allocation of more than $30,000,000 this year, the J.D.C. reported, $6,000,000 has been expended for food, clothing, medical supplies and other essential services for displaced Jews in Germany, Austria and Italy; $7,000,000 ##as allocated for reconstruction programs in Eastern Europe; $3,250,000 has been appropriated for relief in Western Europe, and $2,000,000 was set aside for emigration did to the U.S. Palestine and other countries.
