“Enemy forces last night shelled southern Jerusalem with two-inch mortars,” an Israeli communique reported here today. An Arab cannon was used for the first time in the northern Jerusalem area from the direction of the Sheikh Jarrach quarter, the announcement stated. Remat Rechel was also shelled early today, while hand grenades were hurled against Jewish positions from the Arab-held old City.
The appeal by William Sylvester, former employee of the Jerusalem Electric Corporation who was found guilty of transmitting information to the Arabs during the Israeli-Arab fighting, and was sentenced to seven years imprisonment, today went into its second day and is expected to last all week.
