A 24-year-old Palestinian Arab arrested at Heathrow Airport last Christmas Eve, was sentenced to 18 months’ imprisonment today for possession of arms and ammunition. The accused, Mohammed Fuheid, was acquitted on another charge of carrying explosives, detonators and firing devices. Explosives, a pistol and ammunition were found in the false bottom of a suitcase he was carrying at the time of his arrest. He was also carrying a forged passport.
Prosecutor Brian Leary said before the verdict was rendered that Fuheid admitted he intended to use the arms and explosives against an Israeli target in Sweden. He was enroute from Beirut to Stockholm when arrested and had landed in London only to change planes. Fuheid admitted during his trial that he enlisted in El Fatah, trained for guerrilla warfare and emerged a Lt. after a military course in Algiers.
