Although the city has a Jewish majority, Jerusalem today came under the control of an Arab mayor and an Arab-controlled municipal Council, under a decision of the Palestine Government. Mustopha Bey Khalidi, former Supreme Court Justice, took over the mayoralty from Vice-Mayor Daniel Auster, Jewish municipal councillor, who had been acting as mayor since last October, when Mayor Husseinel khalidi, cousin of the new mayor, was exiled for complicity in Arab Terrorism.
Mayor Khalidi, in a statement, announced a policy of impartiality. Mr. Auster, speaking for the Jewish councillors, stated that the Jewish population had not renounced its majority rights, but would, postpone making its just demands until a more opportune time. He stressed that the Government had Given assurances that Mayor Khalidi’s term would end in 1939.
