Secretary of State John Foster Dulles today cancelled his plan to spend the week-end at his vacation island in Lake Ontario and decided to stay in Washington to watch Arab-Israel developments, it was announced here by the State Department.
The State Department flatly denied today a report that the U.S. Second Armored Division had been ordered to proceed from Germany to the Middle East. A similar denial was made today by military authorities. The State Department stressed that there was no serious intention here of sending additional forces to the Middle East.
State Department spokesman Lincoln White said today that the statement yesterday by U.S. Ambassador Edward Lawson commending Israel for restraint in face of Arab raids was made on his own initiative and not as a result of instructions from Washington. He added that this was entirely within diplomatic procedural propriety. Asked if he was aware if U.S. Ambassador Henry Byroade was communicating similar commendation to Egyptian Premier Nasser, Mr. White said he had no way of knowing.
A plea for U.S. alliance with Israel by providing the Jewish State with arms was voiced today by Rep. Albert W. Cretella (R. Conn.) in a statement before Congress. Rep. Cretella said. "The time is now for our leadership to spring into action which will strongly assert our alliance with the democratic state of Israel by making provisions for aiding her with arms for her legitimate self-defense."
