President Truman and British Prime Minister Winston Churchill today discussed the Arab-Israel situation as well as other problems concerning the Middle East, including the formation of the projected Middle East Command.
A statement issued by the White House said that the President and Mr. Churchill continued their discussions on military matters and “also reviewed current problems in the Middle East.” Burton Berry, Assistant Secretary of State for Near Eastern Affairs, participated in the discussions.
While no details of today’s talks were disclosed, it was learned that Truman and Churchill ordered their foreign secretaries to begin work immediately on a program to coordinate British and American policies in the Middle East. U.S. Secretary of State Dean Acheson and British Foreign Secretary Anthony Eden will follow up this order by starting conferences independent of the Truman-Churchill meetings.
