William M. Rountree, Assistant Secretary of State for Near Eastern Affairs, told a national conference on the Middle East today that “the Arab-Israel tension clouds almost every issue in the Near East and gives rise to great bitterness.”
He said it was under the Tripartite Declaration of 1950 and U. S. obligations under the United Nations Charter that this country supported Egypt’s frontiers and armistice lines in the recent crisis.
Mr. Rountree told the conference, which was sponsored by the Dallas Council on World Affairs and News Week, that the UN represents an important and fundamental element in American policy in the Near East. He said that “for ten years, the machinery created within the United Nations has watched over and mitigated friction between Israel and the Arab States.”
