Amin Joujoura, former member of the Knesset and leader of an Arab party affiliated with the Mapai Party, was today elected Mayor of Nazareth as several parties within the all-Arab city joined to defeat a Communist bid for the mayoralty.
Mr. Joujoura, a member of the Greek Orthodox Church, was supported by Moslems and by Christians, receiving eight of the 15 votes in the municipal council. Abdullah Farrah, a non-Communist who was supported by the Communists as a candidate for the mayoralty, received only his own vote and that of the six Communist councillors.
This development is expected to end the disorders in Nazareth which followed on the heels of a Communist victory in the municipal elections two months ago, when the party emerged with 40 percent of the total vote. Afterwards, there were several demonstrations by anti-Communists who broke up one council meeting rather than permit the election of a Communist mayor.
