Magistrate Ralph B. Bodilly today sentenced a group of twenty Arab leaders of the bloody riots of October 27 in Jaffa to varying terms in jail. Jamal al Husseini, Sheikh Abdul Kader Muzaffar and Auni Abdul Hadi Bey, prominent members of the Arab Executive, were sentenced to serve ten months in jail; seven other leaders were sentenced to five months’ imprisonment, and three acquitted. All the Arab leaders were freed on bail pending an appeal of the sentences.
The charge against the prisoners was that they had assembled illegally, contrary to article twenty-five of the Criminal Offenses Ordinance of 1929.
The Jaffa demonstration organized by the Arab Executive was part of a nation-wide series of protests against Jewish immigration into Palestine and against the sale of land to the Jews. The Jaffa demonstration turned out to be the most serious single incident in the entire campaign begun by the Arab Executive. Eleven were killed and more than 100 injured when Arab demonstrators refused to disperse when called upon to do so by police.
