The Arab League Secretariat has advanced by one week a special League Council meeting on the East European immigration to Israel, and has asked that member states send their premiers because of the “emergency nature” of the problem, it was reported here today. The March 3 meeting will be moved to Feb. 23.
Arab experts here speculated on whether the date shift was connected with a reported meeting yesterday between Abdel Khalek Hassouna, Arab League General Secretary, and the Rumanian Ambassador to the United Arab Republic and, if it was, whether the “emergency” call implied the failure of that meeting.
(London sources reported today that King Hussein of Jordan was expected during his forthcoming visit to London to discuss with British officials Israel’s plans to absorb a large number of East European immigrants as well as the entire Palestine problem.
(Hassouna was quoted as asserting that “positive action” was required by the Arab states to counter the new immigration, which he said could be even more “disastrous” for Arab interests than the “seizure of Palestine by the Zionists in 1948.”)
