The Arab League Political Committee, which is currently meeting in Cairo, has given an Iraqi plan for an Arab federation a cool reception and has consigned the proposal to a “study,” it was reported here today from the Egyptian capital.
The dispatch said that only Jordan endorsed the idea of such a federation and that the opposition to it came from Saudi Arabia and Syria. It pointed out that Saudi Arabian opposition springs from hostility to the Hashemite family which rules both Jordan and Iraq, while Syria fears the revile of a “Greater Syria” plan which would swallow Syria and Lebanon in a federated state dominated by Iraq and Jordan.
