The Arab League Council has asked all member states to press the Italian Government not to “endanger its friendly relations with the Arab peoples” by expanding its economic relations with Israel, it was reported here today from Cairo. The Council also was reported to have decided on a large-scale “friendship campaign” with the African countries to counteract Israel’s friendly relations with several of those countries.
The 31st session of the Arab League Council dealt mainly with the “Palestine problem” and adopted a number of resolutions, including one calling for a meeting of member states at a “high level” to formulate a common Arab policy to “recover the territory of Palestine. ” The Council also called on all member states to fight within the United Nations “the moral and material support which this organization gives to Palestine, thus harming the interests of the Palestine Arabs and compromising peace in the Middle East. “
Expressing “anxiety” about the immigration of East European Jews to Israel, the Council named a special committee to fight this “reinforcement of the Zionists, ” and to contact the Governments of Rumania, Poland and Austria to obtain “immediate cessation of Jewish emigration to Palestine. “
