The Palestine question, and particularly the fate of the Arab refugees, continues to occupy the attention of the Arab League Council meeting in Cairo, the Times of London reports today from the Egyptian capital.
The League continues to maintain its “resistance” to Israel, the Times report states, adding that its decision that the Foreign Ministers should head the Arab delegations to the United Nations is activated by the desire to maintain the campaign against Israel. The League’s political committee has recommended that unofficial Arab bodies, as well as official organs, should boycott all regional organizations or conferences in which Israel participates.
The committee will recommend that the Palestine Arab refugees be given employment in any country in which they choose to settle and that the Arab states should pool financial aid to supplement U.N. assistance for the refugees, the Times reports. It adds that while the Arab League will continue to insist upon implementation of U.N. resolutions on the right of the refugees to return to their former homes, it has begun to treat the refugee issue “more realistically.” There is an “implied recognition that a refugee will not be able to return to Israel,” It says.
