The general strike proclaimed by the Palestine Arab Executive in commemoration of the first anniversary of the execution of the three Arabs, Atta Zeer, Mohammed Jam Joun and Fuad Hedjazi, who were found guilty of the murder of Jews during the Palestine massacres in August 1929, is about two-thirds effective, so far as shops and vehicles are concerned, Major Wainwright, the Superintendent of Police, told the J.T.A. this morning, adding that he expected normal activities to be resumed by mid-day, after the conclusion of the special service in the Mosque of Omar in memory of the executed Arabs.
The countryside has been quiet, and there has been no movement towards Jerusalem. No incidents are reported from Haifa or anywhere else. The usual police precautions have been taken everywhere.
In Jerusalem, three Arab and two Jewish Communists have been arrested, the Arabs for raising a red flag near Ain Karem, and the Jews for distributing Communist handbills in the Zichron Moshe quarter.
A proclamation to Arab women to join in the general strike was issued by Mrs. Khakedi and Mrs. Moghanan. The “Jamea el Arabia”, the organ of the Grand Mufti and the Moslem Supreme Council, came out to-day with a big black border, calling upon all Arabs to observe the day as a day of mourning.
The Hebrew Labour daily “Davar” contrasts “the utterances of Moussa Kazim Pasha”, the President of the Palestine Arab Executive, on the Arab “martyrs” with the “futile” poem for which the Revisionist daily “Haam” has been suspended, and concludes that the Palestine Government, in suspending the “Haam”, is trying to show that it is the Jews who are engaged in incitement and are disturbing the peace.
