Fuad Bey Hamza, Foreign Minister of Saudi Arabia, today declared that the collapse of the London conference on Palestine was due to the gravity of the international situation as a whole. He expressed the opinion that Britain’s plan for settlement of the question would be placed in effect during the Easter Parliamentary recess.
“The British Government is attempting to institute a plan which will satisfy the Arabs without arousing the hostility of the Jews,” the Foreign Minister declared in an interview with Havas. “Whatever might be the immediate result of the London conference it will prove valuable to the Arab cause, which, with the official support of the Arab kingdoms, was able to arouse a demonstration on this occasion unparalleled in the past 22 years.”
Fuad Bey paid tribute to Colonial Secretary MacDonald and attributed most of the difficulties encountered at London to American hostility to the British plan for eventual establishment of an independent Arab state in Palestine. “Only a fool would expect America to defend the Arab cause when the Jews control such an important number of votes, and Roosevelt is no fool,” said the Arabian statesman.
