Arab student demonstrators burned an Israeli flag near the Israel Embassy here yesterday. A can of oil used to soak the flag was ignited and several demonstrators and police were singed, after which the demonstration broke up. It was organized by the “Friends of Palestine” and first marched on the United States Embassy where a letter of protest was left. The marchers, estimated at about 1,000 young Arabs, then moved toward the Israel Embassy but were halted by police short of their mark. They shouted “long live El Fatah” and “Free Palestine.” Placards they carried equated Zionism with Nazism and proclaimed a struggle against “American imperialism.”
The demonstration was apparently prompted by rumors, denied last week, that Britain was preparing to sell Israel 240 Centurion tanks.
