Two Arab terrorists were killed in a clash with troops today, an Arab village chieftain was slain and five villagers kidnapped in continuing terrorism.
Immediate removal of a punitive police post in a Haifa Jewish quarter, established after bombing of an Arab cafe, was demanded today at a meeting of the Haifa Jewish community. Cancellation of a collective fine and release of ten Jews detained in connection with the bombing were also demanded. Speakers cited embitterment of the Jewish populace at recent terrorism and pointed to the unpunished wounding of a Jew on March 11 and killing of another on March 27.
Arab women, meanwhile, demonstrated in Haifa for the third day for release of Arabs held at Acre. Shabab, the Arab Nationalist youth movement, issued a call for a meeting at the mosque, raising fears of new incitement.
Security and increased Jewish immigration to Palestine were asked of High Commissioner Harold Alfred MacMichael by Rabbi Moshe Blau on behalf of the Agudath Israel, religious non-Zionist organization. Rabbi Blau also expressed his organization’s opposition to proposed partition of Palestine.
Menachem M. Ussishkin, world president of the Jewish National Fund, declared at a press conference that it was urgently necessary to establish a chain of new Jewish settlements in the remotest corners of the country, especially northern Palestine. He discussed plans for settlement in the Galilee.
