An auxiliary policeman was wounded today in an Arab attack on a police patrol, while the authorities announced the capture yesterday of Mustopha Hindawy, notorious Arab terrorist and escaped convict, with 17 of his followers.
A band of 70 Arabs attacked a patrol of 20 south of Hebron, wounding the policeman and killing eight horses. Thirty Arab constables rushed from Hebron were repulsed. In response to the radioed call for help, troops were rushed from Jerusalem, but did not pursue the band, fearing an ambush in the narrow ravine.
Hindawy, who was seized by troops in a village near Haifa after police dogs had tracked him from the scene of the slaying Monday of Abraham Goldschlager, was reported to have confessed to participating in a long series of murders going back to last August. Among his victims were said to be Royal Air Force Squadron Leader R.E. Alderson, slain from ambush on Feb. 18, three Jews including Goldschlager, and two Arab police officers.
Among those arrested was Hindawy’s brother. Capture of Hindawy was considered the most important development in the Palestine administration’s campaign to crush terrorism since the arrest and hanging last November of Sheikh. Essadi, aged terrorist leader.
Eight Tel Aviv Jews, held under preventive arrest at Acre concentration camp, were released today. Only five Jerusalem Jews, the last of a total of about 50 held for several months, remain in the camp.
