Any rapprochement between Turkey and the Arab states will not be made at the expense of Israel, but will in fact serve to better guarantee Israel’s security, according to Fuat Koprulu, Turkish Foreign Minister. In a statement to newsmen, Mr. Koprulu said that Turkey will continue its present friendly policy toward Israel, regardless of any relations it may have with Arab nations. At the same time, he stressed that while Turkey was seeking to strengthen its relations with the Arab world it was not contemplating signing bilateral agreements with Egypt or Iraq at this time.
The Foreign Minister said that any arrangement arrived at between Turkey and the Arabs would be a defensive arrangement based on United Nation principles banning aggression or threats of aggression and recommending the solution of all problems through peaceful means. “This,” he continued, “will also reassure Israel.”
