A source at the United Nations said today that the Arab states are planning to demand “a more than observer status” for the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) at the fall session of the General Assembly which opens Sept. 17. Previous reports from Cairo had disclosed that the Arab countries would seek observer status for the PLO. It was learned, meanwhile, that the Algerian Ambassador to the UN, Abdellatif Rahal, is expected to be elected president of the General Assembly. The election is on a regional basis and it is believed that the African states have already endorsed the Algerian envoy.
