Arab circles here have expressed disappointment at the reappointment this weekend of Maj. Gen. E. L. M. Burns, chief of staff of the United Turce Supervision Organization in Palestine, for another year’s term, It was indicated that Egyptian Foreign Minister Mahmoud Fawzi during a trip to Canada last month attempted to bring pressure to bear on the Canadian Government to have Gen. Burns removed at the end of his first year’s term.
The reappointment was announced by UN Secretary General Dag Hammarskjold, last week. In a letter to Gen. Burns, Mr. Hammarskjold wrote: “I have deeply appreciated the efforts which you have made during the past year to maintain and to strengthen the work of the Truce Supervision Organization. I extend to you my best wishes in your further efforts and I assure you of my continued support in your highly responsible post.”
