The New York Times reported today from New Delhi that the envoys of five Arab nations saw Prime Minister Jawaharial Nehru yesterday to seek clarification of a statement he made last week on Israel. Later Arab sources said they were “completely satisfied” with his explanation, which they did not specify.
Mr. Nehru had said at a news conference that the Arab nations had to accept the existence of Israel as a permanent entity and come to terms with her in the interest of maintaining peace. The envoys who met Mr. Nehru were from Iraq, Morocco, the United Arab Republic, Saudi Arabia and the Sudan.
None would say what clarification was sought or the nature of the explanation given, the Times report stated. All that they said was that they had a pleasant half-hour talk with the Indian leader. One Arab spokesman said that getting reconciled to the existence of Israel was going to be “extremely difficult.”
