THE ARAB LEADERSHIP TODAY FORMALLY NOTIFIED GREAT BRITAIN AND THE LEAGUE OF NATIONS THAT IT WANTED THE JEWISH NATIONAL HOME “EXPERIMENT” AND THE MANDATE ENDED AS THE “ONLY NATURAL SOLUTION” TO THE PRESENT ARAB-JEWISH IMPASSE. (THE MANDATES COMMISSION MEETS JULY 30 TO CONSIDER THE BRITISH PLAN TO PARTITION PALESTINE.)
IN A MEMORANDUM SENT SIMULTANEOUSLY TO HIGH COMMISSIONER SIR ARTHUR WAUCHOPE, THE COLONIAL OFFICE IN LONDON AND THE PERMANENT MANDATES COMMISSION IN GENEVA, THE ARAB SUPREME COMMITTEE VOICED ITS OPPOSITION TO THE ROYAL COMMISSION’S PROPOSAL TO PARTITION THE HOLY LAND INTO JEWISH AND ARAB STATES AND A BRITISH-MANDATED CORRIDOR.
THE MEMORANDUM DECLARES THE ARABS ARE PREPARED TO NEGOTIATE IN A “REASONABLE SPIRIT” TO SAFEGUARD THE LEGITIMATE BRITISH INTERESTS AND TO PROTECT THE LEGITIMATE RIGHTS OF THE JEWISH POPULATION AND THE OTHER MINORITIES.
WHILE THE ARAB LEADERSHIP, ACCORDING TO THE MEMORANDUM, WELCOMES THE PROPOSED FUSION OF TWO-THIRDS OF PALESTINE TO THE TRANSJORDAN AS A STEP TOWARDS A UNION OF ARAB COUNTRIES, IT CONSIDERS THIS DID NOT JUSTIFY SURRENDER OF THE REST OF PALESTINE FOR ESTABLISHMENT OF A JEWISH STATE AND A MANDATORY ZONE.
IN ITS PUBLISHED REPORT RECOMMENDING PARTITION AS THE ONLY SOLUTION TO ARAB-JEWISH DIFFICULTIES IN PALESTINE, THE ROYAL COMMISSION DECLARED THE JEWISH NATIONAL HOME “IS NO LONGER AN EXPERIMENT.”
