Arabs today launched a nation-wide three-day general strike in protest against the travel restriction ordinance, as troops began enforcement of the decree. patrols haled interurban traffic at frequent intervals to examine travellers’ identity cards. city streets were blocked by Jewish busses and army trucks while drivers’ cards were inspected.
The strike, which was complete, was observed by merchants and workers. It forced closing down of the railway shops at Haifa. the Iraq petroleum company also was affected by the walkout, 400 employes joining the strike. curfew was imposed in Haifa from seven p.m. Jews and British carried on essential services.
Barclays’ Bank in Jaffa today shifted valuables to Tel Aviv in six armored cars under strong military escort. in Haifa, ii arab notables were arrested during searching operations Fighting was reported at Nablus and Lydda, where Arab raiders were easily repulsed. Mopping up operations continued in Jaffa.
Troops invested Hebron, killing two Arabs who resisted arrest. A Jewish bus was ambushed near jaguar, between Rehoboth. and tel Aviv. the driver, Jeremiah Smilansky, 31, was seriously wounded and a passenger, Abraham was slightly injured.
