An official Syrian source announced today in Damascus that the United States has informed the Arab League through diplomatic channels that America has given a firm warning to Israel to restrict Jewish immigration.
(In Washington, State Department sources said that the Arabs were probably referring to the speech made recently before the American Council for Judaism by Henry A. Byroade, Assistant Secretary of State for Near Eastern Affairs. Mr. Byroade had expressed Arab “fears” about Jewish immigration to Israel. Copies of that speech, in Arabic, have been distributed in Arab countries.)
The Arab states have replied to the State Department that they are not as much concerned at present about the status of immigration as they are about U.S. financial aid to Israel and about the ability of Israel to acquire arms from various countries.
