The Argentine Ministry of Education has promised the DAIA, central representative body of Argentine Jews, that all efforts will be made in the future to guarantee Jewish children in the state schools full “freedom of conscience.”
The pledge was made in response to a number of complaints from the DAIA that Jewish children had been forced to remain in classrooms during Catholic instruction hours, legally required in the Argentine school system. The DAIA had suggested that Jewish children be released from Catholic instruction classes and be taught ethics instead during that time.
The Ministry asserted that an investigation had disclosed that Jewish children remained in the classrooms during Catholic instruction at their own request, but that in the future all measures would be taken to prevent limitations of the “freedom of conscience recognized by the law.”
